Because Sunday worship is a corporate gathering it means the church is invited to take part. You are invited to attend our Sunday morning service. Our worship experience is a great place to learn about First Church and grow in your relationship with God. Our services are designed with you in mind – with a casual setting and an uplifting atmosphere. The experience is refreshing. You’ll find friendly people and a warm welcome. The messages are taken right from the Bible and are relevant to everyday life. Our church is a place for the entire family with something for children and students of all ages!
If you have been attending for a while and have interest in partnering with our leadership community by serving on: a worship team - musician/ vocalist/ sound technician/ Mediashout technician, usher, greeter, scripture reader, please get in touch with the church office or Pastor Barry.
> Small Groups – There are many within our church who recognize that Sunday morning alone is not enough to grow in their relationship to Jesus. Small Groups allow people to go deeper in their relationships with each other and God. Please contact the church office if you would like to be connected to participate in a small group or if you would like to be discipled as a small group leader.
> Adult Sunday School – On Sunday morning at 9:15-10:15am join with a group of adults ranging from 18 to 87 to learn about the scripture passage based on the reading plan we are using for worship services.
> Senior’s Care – We have a number of seniors within our church who appreciate a visit and there are opportunities to lead seniors’ worship services on a regular basis. If you would like to take part please contact the church office.
> Children’s Sunday School - we offer children’s ministry for ages 4 to grade 6 during our morning worship service and are always looking for teens and adults to partner with us. If you would like to get involved please contact our Family Pastor Patty Perry.
> Nursery Care - There is nursery care for infant to age 3 on the main level, with a half door which opens onto the foyer. If you would feel more comfortable staying with your child, the nursery is close enough to the sanctuary to hear the morning worship service.
> Mom to Mom – Each Thursday morning a group of mothers meet to share the joys and challenges of being a mom. Pre-school child care is lovingly provided by a group of volunteers to allow the moms time to Bible study and visit and support one another.
The importance of being hospitable is more than just a platitude with us at First FMC,
we see this practice as an extension of Jesus life in us. Throughout the Bible, God reminds us many times the importance of showing hospitality because that is when we reflect God’s grace to others. Though one of the best ways to show Christ’s love is inviting people to your home for a meal we also have some more corporate ways we serve at First FMC. If you love to cook or pitch in around the kitchen please contact the church office and we can connect you with our Hospitality coordinator.
> Coffee Bar – Each Sunday morning we have coffee and tea and light snacks to help foster an inviting place for people to connect with each other.
> Potluck lunches – At various times in the year we as a church like to gather together for a meal. Sometimes occurs before our annual congregational meeting, or to celebrate the holidays or simply to get a chance to reconnect after summer holidays.
> First FMC Youth Group (grades 7-12) meets three Fridays a month for Meal and Discussion at the church. This is a relaxed time to enjoy a home-cooked meal and hang out with friends who also want to explore the big questions around life, relationships, Jesus, the Bible...and everything! Once a month the youth group gathers for fun activities, and a few times a semester we join with other local youth groups for events. Check out the youth bulletin board in the church foyer or the Facebook page ‘Free Methodist Youth Group’ for up-to-date event info.
> Our volunteer team includes college students in their first year of school who are exploring a call to ministry, and mature members of our church who’ve been walking with Jesus for over half a century. If you have a heart for hospitality, for listening, or for young people you will fit right in! Contact Pastor Rachel if you want to be part of First FMC youth ministry.
Developing young leaders has been in the DNA of this church since the beginning. Dozens of young men and women found their calling at First FMC and went on to serve as pastors, ministry leaders, global missionaries and even national leaders in the Free Methodist movement. If you’re taking the first steps towards a call to ministry, talk to one of our pastoral staff about the following opportunities:
> Weekend modular courses such as ‘The Heart of Canadian Free Methodism’ and ‘Wesleyan Theology’. These classes are a requirement for individuals tracking towards ordination in our denomination, and they can also be used towards a Briercrest College or Seminary degree.
> Opportunities to serve in any of our church ministries, from worship/tech teams, to Childrens’ ministry, to serving at Riverside Mission. We are committed to intentionally mentoring young people and new believers to use their gifts in service to their church family.
> Service learning credits with Briercrest College
Your volunteer hours spent in a First FMC ministry can be used towards the
Service Learning requirements of a Briercrest College degree. (view website)
> Riverside Mission – Riverside is the local Mission for Moose Jaw and serves the community by providing meals and shelter to the less fortunate. Its vision is to offer care and compassion to our community’s less fortunate delivering a positive message of hope and love to people through our actions and words.
First FMC has been partnering with the Mission by encouraging Pastor Barry to serve on their Board of Directors and through First FMC’s members volunteering. If you would like to take part in this ministry please contact the church.
> “Voltage”– This annual chem-free New Year’s party for teens is a huge undertaking. Joe’s Place staff and volunteers bring amazing energy and creativity to the planning and running of this event. Our church folks can partner with them by volunteering hours to sew costumes or build rigs the weeks beforehand, work shifts at the different activity stations during the night, or by showing up the morning after to help with tear-down and clean-up. It’s exciting to be part of a city-wide outreach event run on this grand scale! If you would like to lend a hand with Voltage 2014, please contact Pastor Rachel.
> Joe’s Place Youth Centre (Visit the website)
Joes Place Youth Centre is a free, weekend drop-in centre for youth ages 14-19. They regularly run concerts, and fun nights like ‘Coffee House’ or ‘Karaoke Night.’ Joe’s Place ministry was, and is, influential in the lives of many First FMC youth and our youth enjoy spending time at Joe’s.
Pastor Rachel spends some of her time volunteering at Joe’s Place, teaching Bible studies occasionally at their Tuesday ‘Dinner and a Movie’ time, or helping out at weekend events. While Joe’s has a high-energy team of Briercrest College students September-April, they run their drop-in ministry year-round and are always looking for solid adults with a connection to local churches to be a presence at Tuesday Bible study or weekend drop-in times. If you want to be a part of Joe’s Place ministry, contact Pastor Rachel or reach Joe’s Place directly at 306-693-JOES.
> Sri Lanka Partnership – In November 2007 First FMC began its connection with the Free Methodist Church in Sri Lanka. The next year began a process of seeking wisdom from God as to where in the world First FMC would focus on ministering. Rev. Dan Sheffield (our denominations’ Director of Intercultural and Global Ministries) came and guided a process of prayer and reflection, as a result a more formal partnership with Sri Lanka FMC began.
There have been several trips to Sri Lanka and continued connection with our brothers and sisters in Christ there. Our way of doing missions is not going with all the answers to serve Christ, rather to see what God is doing there already and ask those leaders where we can best come alongside of the work in place. Why not prayerfully consider if you would like to join with us and Jesus in the work in Sri Lanka?
> International Child Care Ministries – This is our Free Methodist Child Sponsorship Program, involved in 13 different developing countries around the world providing children with the necessary food, clothing, medicine and education to meet their basic needs.
